Recently, the National Health Commission officially announced the list of major national science and technology special projects for the prevention and control of emerging emergencies and major infectious diseases in 2025. The National Science and Technology Major Project "Innovative Product Development and Transformation to Guide the Formulation of Precision Treatment Plans and Scientific Treatment Management of Tuberculosis" (No.: 2025ZDO1907000), led by Beijing Chest Hospital, was successfully approved. This project is the first major national science and technology project in the field of tuberculosis prevention and control in China in the past decade, focusing on the transformation of bacteriological monitoring and early warning technology, filling the gap of national special projects in this direction.

The

project is led by Professor Huang Hairong of Beijing Chest Hospital, and cooperates with Rocgene (Beijing) Scientific Instrument Co., Ltd., Xiamen University, Guangzhou Chest Hospital (Guangzhou Tuberculosis Prevention and Control Institute, Guangzhou Tuberculosis Treatment Center) and many other units.

As a country with a high burden of tuberculosis in the world, China has long faced core challenges such as long treatment cycles, lagging efficacy monitoring, and high risk of drug-resistant tuberculosis transmission. Traditional tuberculosis efficacy evaluation requires a waiting period of 2 to 3 months, and the drug resistance testing cycle is longer, which can easily lead to treatment delays, exacerbations and cross-transmission, which brings great pressure to public health prevention and control.


This project closely focuses on the strategic needs of tuberculosis prevention and control in China, with bacteriology technology as the core breakthrough, focusing on the research and development of three core technology systems:      

⪼ Early efficacy evaluation technology: Based on bacterial activity detection, it aims to accurately evaluate the efficacy within 2 weeks of treatment, changing the traditional "empirical treatment" model that relies on long-term cultivation;

⪼ Drug resistance early warning technology: By accurately detecting tuberculosis bacillus resistance genes, strive to warn the risk of drug resistance 6-12 months before the appearance of clinical symptoms, and block the spread from the source;

⪼ Standardized transformation system: Develop lightweight and standardized testing solutions to adapt to multi-scenario applications such as primary hospitals and CDCs, greatly improving technology accessibility.

After the successful implementation of the

project, it will significantly improve the precision of tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment in China, shorten the efficacy evaluation cycle, reduce the incidence of drug resistance, and provide a scientific basis for the optimization of clinical diagnosis and treatment plans. At the same time, through technological transformation and industrial extension, it is expected to promote the localization and upgrading of China's tuberculosis detection equipment, which is of great strategic significance for building a solid national biosecurity defense line for the prevention and control of major infectious diseases, helping the implementation of the "Healthy China" strategy, and supporting the global goal of "ending the tuberculosis epidemic by 2035".
