In mid-September, the Chongqing Municipal Health Commission announced one confirmed imported monkeypox case, marking the first imported monkeypox case in Chinese mainland. Prior to this, four confirmed monkeypox cases had been identified in China.

Dangers of Monkeypox
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), between August 7 and September 5, cases increased by 91% and deaths by 64% in less than one month, with an overall fatality rate of 0.03%. While 99% of infected individuals survive, nearly 100% suffer permanent facial scarring and disfigurement that cannot be repaired.

Monkeypox virus has a physical mortality rate as low as 1%, but a severe social impact on recovered patients, greatly affecting quality of life.
What is Monkeypox?
Monkeypox is a rare viral zoonotic disease transmitted from animals to humans, caused by the monkeypox virus. It can spread between animals and humans, and also be transmitted secondarily among humans.

Symptoms in patients are similar to those of smallpox but clinically milder. Following the eradication of smallpox in 1980 and the subsequent cessation of smallpox vaccination, monkeypox has become the most severe orthopoxvirus.
Prevention of Monkeypox
To prevent possible monkeypox infection, the following precautions are recommended:
1) Avoid direct skin contact with foreigners;
2) Avoid skin contact with people who have returned from abroad in the recent three weeks;
3) Avoid skin contact with strangers;
4) Maintain good hand hygiene;
5) Disinfect public toilet seats before use.
